Adam goes back the modernist roots of avant-garde composition in Berlin with the music of Schönberg, Busoni, Varèse and more.

It’s half-time at Red Bull Music Academy Berlin, and Adam Harper (transmitting all the way from Washington, DC) will take a different path to honor the storied musical history of the German capital. Keeping in mind that all things futuristic can only be understood comprehensively through the lens of yesterday’s avant-garde, Adam examines the rich legacy of modernist composers in Berlin. He goes all the way back to the early 21st century to find traces of deconstructionist composition and pre-echoes of atonality and electronic music in the works of Schönberg, Alexander von Zemlinsky, Brecht-collaborator Hanns Eisler and more.
