Follow the funk of Bay Area rap back to its ’80s forefathers Whodini and Prince by way of the tracks that sampled them.

Though the Bay Area has always taken pride in its insular and often impenetrable styles of rap production, the sound of the Bay is not entirely without outside influence. In particular, two very different funk purveyors from the 1980s – Whodini and Prince – loom heavily over the catalogs of some of the biggest stars. This week All the Raps will decode that DNA by listening to the many Bay Area rap songs that have sampled those artists, featuring tracks by Mac Dre, 2Pac, MC Hammer, RBL Posse and more.
