The French-Canadian electronic heroine with a new wave flair mixes rave tracks and techno anchored by punchy hardware rhythms.

After studying classical violin in her youth, French-Canadian musician and vocalist Marie Davidson became so enamoured with analog electronic music that she dropped out of school. Davidson’s work has appeared on a variety of indie labels (like Austin’s Holodeck, and DFA, as a member of the duo Essaie Pas), but it was her 2016 solo album, Adieux Au Dancefloor, (released on Veronica Vasicka’s Cititrax label while she was a participant at the Academy in Montréal), that thrust her into the spotlight. Armed with an arsenal of synthesizers, drum machines, sequencers, portable recorders and pedals, Davidson’s hardware-based live shows mix Chicago house and cold wave, dreamy Italo and French new wave, all over a bed of pummeling techno; her arresting vocals, in English and French, punch with a playful, kinetic energy.
