Jamaica’s esteemed production crew of dancehall renegades give a primer on their outsider riddims, DIY ethos and signature bird-call tag.
Kingston-based dancehall crew Equiknoxx have been making music for the better part of a decade. Co-founder Gavsborg’s breakthrough was Busy Signal’s 2004 single “Step Out,” but he decided to focus on new underground talent rather than trying to break the charts with established MCs. So in July 2016, he and production partner Time Cow released the debut Equiknoxx album, Bird Sound Power, on Demdike Stare’s DDS label. They join Max Glazer in the studio for the duration of his weekly two-hour show to discuss their decision to sidestep the mainstream, tapping into their collective consciousness and the power of that bird sound.
