Coming off of last year’s inescapable collaboration with Vybz Kartel, “Infrared,” Jamaica’s fast-rising vocalist details his unique style.
Blending dancehall, hip-hop, reggae and soca, Masicka defies easy classification. Born in Portmore, Jamaica, the St. Catherine-based vocalist began showcasing his prodigious lyrical abilities in high school, earning him comparisons to the inimitable Vybz Kartel (in fact, he would go on to work with his producer, Calabar). Since then, Masicka has voiced King Tubby edits on Jamaican experimentalists Equiknoxx Records, collaborated with Worl’ Boss on 2017’s “Infrared” and with New York MC Kranium on “Beach House,” plus he’s broken through on his own with summertime jams like “10 Outta 10.” He joins host Max Glazer in the studio on Valentine’s Day to reflect on his rapid rise and discuss his recently released EP Start From the Grung.
