A disciple of Peter Tosh and Bob Marley, Protoje is leading the reggae revival movement with an awareness of social justice.
Protoje’s first serious involvement in music was his spearheading role in the Vendetta Sound System alongside his cousin Donovan Bennett (now known as the chart-topping producer and label head Don Corleon). Yet Protoje is very much his own man, expanding on the vintage reggae that his socially conscious music is rooted in. On albums like 2015’s Ancient Future, 2016’s Royalty Free and this year’s A Matter of Time, he can be heard mixing traces of dub and rock along with whatever else touches his ever-widening horizon. On this episode of the Federation Sound with Max Glazer, Protoje discusses his upcoming fourth album and an epic Memorial Day weekend playing Coney Island with Sister Nancy, Dutty Bookman and more.
