The orchestral ambient composer and filmmaker discusses her Greek heritage, dream logic and epiphanies.
Christina Vantzou is a musician and filmmaker of Greek descent originally from Kansas City, Missouri, who studied art in Baltimore and is now based in Brussels. She worked as one half of the audio-visual duo the Dead Texan, which released its self-titled 2004 album on Kranky.
Since parting ways with the project, Vantzou has focused on composing and recording ambient orchestral music — she released four albums between 2011 and 2018 (titled No. 1 through No. 4), also for Kranky. Each of the albums has been accompanied by short films made by Vantzou that are based on slow motion photography and that work to achieve a dream-like state for the audience. In this Fireside Chat, the composer and filmmaker discusses her Greek heritage, dream logic, epiphanies, working outside her comfort zone and much more.
