Mick Jenkins’s music is filled with poetic lyricism, vivid images and great melodies. The rapper is part of a wave of young, talented writers like Noname, Saba and Chance the Rapper, who experienced open-mic workshops with Brother Mike and Young Chicago Authors. After dropping his debut mixtape Trees&Truth (featuring the debate-sparking single “Martyrs”) he’s had co-signs, features and productions with Joey Bada$$, Ghostface Killah and Kaytranada. His debut album, The Healing Component, explored what it means to love, while his second album, Pieces of a Man, faces and evaluates human truths.
