Expressing the romance and loneliness of youth with witty lyrics and riffs, this Japanese-American indie rocker is a refreshing new star.

Mitski Miyawaki, a Japanese-American musician, makes lo-fi yet punchy guitar anthems that speak to the awkward experiences of youth. After self-releasing her first two records in 2012, she gained a loyal underground following which has grown with each new album. Her fourth solo release, 2016’s Puberty 2, explores the romance and loneliness of contemporary American life, with indie-rock tropes cleverly captured through her personal lens. In tandem with her music, Mitski is known for her humor and the dry, insightful storytelling that’s infused into her lyrics and live performances.
