Marking the label’s 20th anniversary, cofounder Greg Anderson recounts the history of one of underground metal’s most vital outposts.

Formed in 1998 by Greg Anderson and Stephen O’Malley, Southern Lord is an experimental-metal record label that’s become synonymous with contemporary trends in underground rock music, such as drone metal, sludge and stoner rock. The early 2000s saw Southern Lord break new ground, with bands such as Sunn O))) and legends like Earth joining the roster, pushing drone and doom to new extremes, alongside ambient strains of black metal and scuzzy hardcore punk. Now in its 20th year, Southern Lord is regarded as one of the most important metal imprints in the world. In this conversation, Anderson details the label’s early days, ongoing influences and future-facing ideas.
