The week’s best new electronic music releases, plus conversations with Leisure System cofounder Barker and Berlin house lifer Cinthie.
Last week’s episode put the spotlight on Detroit and its rich musical legacy, but this time around, host Shawn Reynaldo has set his sights on another electronic music capital: Berlin. Aside from the usual assortment of the week’s top new electronic offerings, plus an exclusive premiere of a track off We Will Always Dry, the forthcoming new album from UK techno stalwart Blawan, this episode includes interviews with a couple Berlin-based artists working to push the city’s music culture forward. Up first is Barker, a UK native who’s been making waves in Berlin for many years, both as the cofounder of the Leisure System party/label and as one half of Barker & Baumecker (alongside longtime Panorama Bar resident Andy Baumecker). However, with a new solo EP dropping this week on the fabled Ostgut Ton imprint, Barker speaks here about the record’s surprising lack of percussion, the dynamics of working alone and the future of Leisure System. Also stopping by is Cinthie, cofounder of Beste Modus (and several other labels), who speaks about her long history in Berlin, her recent EP for the Ground Service label and how she juggles her many musical responsibilities with motherhood.
