The week’s best new electronic music, plus Maria Minerva goes deep on her late friend Cherushii and the music they made together.
In the fast-paced world of electronic music, it’s easy for memories of releases, parties and even festivals to fade away, but the Ghost Ship fire is something that remains seared into our collective memory. More than two years after the tragedy, the loss of 36 lives that night in Oakland still feels fresh. One of them was San Francisco producer Cherushii, a longtime dance music lover and veteran producer and live performer who was starting to get her due after a few releases on 100% Silk. Before her death, she’d collaborated with her friend and labelmate Maria Minerva on a number of tracks, with the intention of eventually releasing a joint EP. Minerva has managed to finish the record, a colorful effort which is slated to arrive via 100% Silk next week — here she talks in-depth about her friend Cherushii, and details the difficult process of finding and finalizing their songs for this posthumous release. Elsewhere, host Shawn Reynaldo shares all of the week’s best new electronic music, and offers up an exclusive premiere off the forthcoming album from Montreal producer CFCF.
