Stacey Pullen and Norm Talley
The week’s best new electronic music releases, plus conversations with two staples of Detroit dance music: Stacey Pullen and Norm Talley.
With the Movement festival just days away, Red Bull Radio is making its annual pilgrimage to the Motor City for a full week of live-from-Detroit programming. Although First Floor host Shawn Reynaldo won’t be making the trip, he’s nonetheless getting into the Detroit spirit by interviewing two staples of the city’s storied electronic music scene. Stacey Pullen first came to prominence in the early ’90s as part of Detroit techno’s second wave alongside artists like Carl Craig and Jeff Mills, and having just piloted a new mix to kick off the newly minted Detroit Love label, he speaks here about putting his own stamp on techno and continual efforts to spread the gospel of his hometown. Norm Talley’s story goes back even further — although he’s recently made waves with music on Omar S’s FXHE label, Talley recounts his teenage days buying records from the legendary Ken Collier and how Eddie Fowlkes helped push him into the world of production. Elsewhere, we run down all of the week’s best new electronic music offerings, and also find the time to exclusively premiere a track off the upcoming EP The Corner by PTA, a new collaboration between Physical Therapy and Ambivalent.
