The Godmother of House connects the dots between the past, present and future of Detroit’s rich musical and cultural legacy.
Stacey “Hotwaxx” Hale was Detroit’s first female house DJ. Growing up in a house with vinyl-collecting brothers, Hale was primed from a young age to try her hand at electronic music. She learned how to mix records at Motor City institutions like Cheeks, the Warehouse and Club Hollywood in the late ’80s, while simultaneously working at seminal radio stations like WJLB and WDRQ. Still, her credentials go way beyond dance music; aside from serving as the assistant musical director of Black Women Rock, Hale teaches after-school programs at Girls Rock Detroit and also performs with the band Nyumba Muziki. Armed with decades of her own musical experiences, she has a passion for sharing her knowledge with up-and-coming Detroit artists, a desire which also colors her show on Red Bull Radio. Each month, Hale makes sure to shine a light on some the city’s rising talents while also showcasing the sort of house cuts that only a true Detroit veteran would have in their repertoire.
