The Godmother welcomes the German-born, Detroit-raised DJ and club owner to share music and talk shop.

Known as the Godmother of House Music, Stacey “Hotwaxx” Hale was Detroit’s first female DJ of the genre. With vinyl-collecting brothers and a background in engineering, Hale was primed from a young age to try her hand at electronic music. She learned how to mix records at Motor City institutions like Cheeks, the Warehouse and Club Hollywood in the late ‘80s, while simultaneously working at seminal frequencies WJLB, WDRQ and others. But her credentials go beyond dance music: Hale is the assistant musical director of Black Women Rock, teaches after-school programs at Girls Rock Detroit and performs with the band Nyumba Muziki.
