The Roots frontman, arguably the most famous drummer working today, breaks down his inimitable, chameleonic style.

Best known for his work with the Roots, D’Angelo and Erykah Badu, and as part of the house band for The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson is widely regarded as one of the finest drummers of his era. He’s beloved not just for his prolific output and technical chops, but also for his big-hearted way of telling stories — as J-Zone and Questlove sit down behind their respective drum kits, their free-flowing conversation is peppered with laughter, personal histories and technical insights. Demonstrating some of his favorite drum patterns from across the hip-hop spectrum, Questlove talks J-Zone through the many methodologies of rhythm that have shaped his life, including the London drum & bass scene, playing as a child in his father’s band and much more.
