The South London musician and vocalist selects downbeat experimental pop, classic soul tunes and ambient tracks, from Grouper to Mica Levi.
Coby Sey is a musician and vocalist based in South London. He’s collaborated and performed with artists such as BAFTA and Oscar-nominated composer Mica Levi, Hyperdub’s towering stranger Dean Blunt, Big Dada-signed rapper DELS, laconic pop artist Tirzah and radical newcomer Klein, among others. The summer of 2016 saw Sey self-release his debut solo 7” single, “Shields/I Have To,” and in 2017 a 10” on Whities, a young London label. Entitled “Whities 010: Transport For Lewisham,” the five-track EP rolls deep — post-punk basslines reverberate among distorted club beats, a miasmatic sound guided by Sey’s accented, mumbling bars. On this episode of Headphone Highlights, he presents a selection of downbeat experimental pop, classic soul tunes and ambient tracks, from frequent collaborator Mica Levi to Grouper, D’Angelo and more.
