A mastermind on the mic and behind the decks: NYC’s multi-talented Edan guides us through some of his all time bugged-out classics.
Edan is known for his unlikely take on hip hop culture, where traditional rap songs are often skewed by 60s rock samples and foreign language choruses, not to mention the off-beat humor and surrealist imagery incorporated in his lyrics. His music is an astounding pastiche of dance, rap, and punk that utilizes everything from turntables to tape echo, glockenspiel to guitar, and moog to kazoo. Despite trailing off the beaten track musically, Edan blends his influences perfectly into something new, and he has the skills to back it up. The man is a top turntablist and MC, taking it back to basics and forward at the same time: rock-based psychedelia married with some of the pillars of hip hop and whatever’s taking Edan’s fancy at the time. His offbeat rhymes and singular beat-making are snapshots of sound, and his bugged-out collages aim to overload the senses, while maintaining the party.
