Aphex Twin, Alice Coltrane, Lightning Bolt and more: Avant-garde drum practitioner Greg Fox highlights a few of his favorite beat innovators from across the musical spectrum.

While there’s little doubt that drum machines and music software are responsible for generating much of the percussion that dominates today’s music, an artist like Greg Fox is proof that there’s truly no substitute for a highly skilled drummer. Born and bred in New York City, he’s been involved in literally dozens of records in recent years, working with a diverse range of artists and ensembles that includes Liturgy, ZS, Ben Frost, Colin Stetson, Skeletons, Hieroglyphic Being and Man Forever, to name just a few. Using a hybridized electroacoustic drum setup, his solo work—both under his own name and as GDFX—ventures into uncharted sonic territory, while his efforts as the captain of Guardian Alien trend toward spastically freeform psychedelia.
