Dipping into locales as far away as Brazil and Japan, the LA trio shares the funk, dub, soul, psych, boogie that shaped their own R&B brew.
Los Angeles R&B trio KING officially surfaced in 2011, but the group’s history goes back a whole lot further—after all, Paris and Amber Strother are twin sisters. The former began playing music as a child and eventually went on to a classical education at the Berklee College of Music. These days, she’s responsible for the majority of KING’s music, while vocal duties are split between Amber and fellow member Anita Bias. The group’s first record, The Story, revealed a dreamily soulful spirit, along with an appreciation of ’70s-style musicianship, and quickly earned accolades from across the board, including a major co-sign from Prince. Since then, KING has collaborated with jazz pianist Robert Glasper and electro-soul outfit the Foreign Exchange, but their talents shine brightest on We Are King, the group’s long-awaited debut album.
