The Rinse FM cofounder picks his favorite garage tunes, showing the roots of grime and dubstep in the process.
As one of the founding members of the Pay As U Go Cartel, the garage crew that kickstarted the careers of artists including Wiley, Maxwell D, Geeneus and DJ Target, DJ Slimzee is one of the godfathers of the UKG and grime scenes. His Sidewinder sets alongside Wiley and Dizzee Rascal have passed into folklore, and as a cofounder and DJ on Rinse FM in its early days, he was able to push his love of jungle and UK garage music through the underground and into the mainstream. The Rinse studio was in his house for a whole year, and his dedication to setting up aerials and transmitters even earned him a rooftop Asbo (anti-social behavior order). From his short-lived yet foundational Slimzos record label to collecting a gold disc for his contribution to Dizzee’s Boy In Da Corner, Slimzee’s fingerprints are all over modern-day music, spilling out from the UK underground and well beyond.
