The Bears in Space DJ chronicles a career spent building LA’s disco scene, from downtown warehouse parties to Beige.
One half of the duo behind seasonal Los Angeles lot party Bears in Space, Victor Rodriguez’s relationship to the city’s queer club scene runs deep — so deep, in fact, that he’s basically one of the people who started it. In this wide-ranging interview with Honey Soundsystem’s Jackie House, the New Jersey-born Cuban-American DJ and promoter chronicles a life spent spreading the joys of disco to the world. From his beginnings in a high school mobile DJ crew to founding one of the city’s first disco parties to his 12-year stint as a resident DJ for the glamorous, celebrity-studded dance night Beige, there have been plenty of adventures along the way (including the time he DJ’d for Grace Jones). Listen in for a hand-picked soundtrack of some of Rodriguez’ favorite tracks of all time. The episode opens with a 30-minute lounge mix from Jackie House.
