Live from Detroit, a former resident at the legendary Music Institute describes some key moments in Motor City techno.

Darrell Wynn is the textbook definition of a DJ’s DJ in Detroit. Best known as D-Wynn, the Detroit-born DJ and occasional producer was a huge part of the success of the Music Institute, widely considered Detroit’s first techno club. “No one could play like D-Wynn,” attested Derrick May. “I always thought that D-Wynn was one of the best DJs in the world.” A resident of the club during its brief existence, he was known for his midnight to 3 AM sets, priming the crowd for May’s headlining slot. And when Inner City started to tour, Wynn was their go-to DJ. Between 1989 and 1993 he collaborated with May as R-Tyme, contributing early classic records to Transmat and KMS. He’s even featured on “The Dance” from the first Rhythim Is Rhythim record. On this special episode of Interdimensional Transmissions, live from our Detroit studio in the lead-up to Movement 2018, Wynn joins BMG and Erika to talk through this history and play through some critical records.
