The Dublin-based R&S affiliates color outside the lines of techno with a live show debuting their latest work, Struggle & Emerge.
Dara Smith and Ian McDonnell first came together in 2001, but the Irish duo has been exceptionally patient in the development of its craft. It wasn’t until 2007 that the experimentally minded and IDM-loving pair released their debut album, Ruido, a particularly harsh and noisy offering. Subsequent records, initially appearing on techno outposts such as Stroboscopic Artefacts, Blueprint and Killekill, found Lakker inching closer to the dancefloor while infusing techno structures with elements of noise, ambient, electro, dub and more. Eventually linking with the esteemed R&S label, the duo issued a pair of well received singles ahead of its second LP, 2015’s Tundra, a fully realized and often avant-garde work that effectively blurred lines between real and virtual, organic and synthesized, natural and artificial. That same year, Lakker unveiled a powerful live A/V show, and the pair continued developing its vision in 2016 with Struggle & Emerge, a maxi EP for R&S.
