CDMX’s fringe dance explorers preview their NAAFI Ball with vogue torchbearer MikeQ and House of Apocalipstick mother Franka Polari.
A community activist, queer theorist and mother of Mexico City ballroom linchpin House of Apocalipstick, Franka Polari met Lao after performing at a series of parties called Noches Transistadas in 2015. The two collaborated on glittering strike-a-pose anthem “Arraza, Gosa y Posa” before Apocalipstick and other CDMX “houses” – House of Shiva, House of Machos and House of Drag – were invited to compete at the inaugural N.A.A.F.I Ball, featuring performances by GHE20G0TH1K’s Venus X and New Jersey vogue ambassador MikeQ. In advance of the third annual N.A.A.F.I Ball this weekend, Mexican Jihad, Fausto Bahía and Lao speak with Polari about the origins of and her role in the development of Mexico City’s vibrant underground vogue and ballroom culture. Together they revisit scene staples like Junior Labeija’s saucy “O.P.U.L.E.N.C.E.” and Felix Pimenta and Nelson D’s cunty kiss-off “Alongada” before MikeQ delivers a runway-worthy guest mix in the second hour.
