The British clubland pioneer, producer and DJ warming up for his To The Rhythm residency at London institution XOYO.
The Phantasy label head takes over at XOYO for Friday nights, with his To The Rhythm residency. For the third week of his residency, Alkan invited Jimmy Edgar and I-F and contributed a special warmup set from the night. Later in the calendar he’ll play back-to-back with Boys Noize, Gerd Janson and Xavier De Rosnay with François K and 2ManyDJs also upcoming. Alkan has taken on many different guises so far — DJ, remixer, label founder, club promoter and radio host — each with great success. From a beginning spinning British indie records in small West End nightclubs to his current club sets that explore the bleeding edge of underground, off-kilter house, techno and disco, he has always been keen to keep moving forward. Despite his reputation as one of the world’s foremost remixers, it was his own Illumination EP that showed Alkan to be the artist that many already knew he was, operating between musical worlds and delivering a shimmering, melancholy anthem in “A Hold On Love.” Through his label Phantasy, Alkan’s creative vision has borne fruit in the music of others. Since 2007, he has released music from Daniel Avery, Connan Mockasin, Ghost Culture, Babe Terror and Tom Rowlands of the Chemical Brothers, as well as his own tracks. He’s curated an award-winning edition of Fabric’s Fabriclive mix series and touched down as a 6Mix resident on BBC Radio 6 Music. He now inhabits a timezone all his own, as a master of both the technical requirements and the poetic sensibility needed to bring great music to his audience of listeners, makers, dancers and lovers.
