Polyrhythmic Brazilian street sounds with a downtown New York edge, warming up for Elza Soares’ triumphant live performance at RBMA Festival NY 2017.

Forro In The Dark are a New York-based band rooted in the traditions of forró, a style of deceptively simple polyrhythmic street sounds from Brazil that blends snappy Portuguese and English lyrics – framed in call and response choruses – and danceable beats. While forró is typically centered on percussion, with instruments like the zabumba, bass drum and triangle in full swing, New Yorkers Forro In The Dark make their own twists to give it all a downtown feel. From their 2003 debut self-titled album, to their 2015 collaborative effort with prolific multi-instrumentalist and composer John Zorn, their fifth album to date, they’ve gradually swapped out the centrepiece accordion for a guitar and moved towards a more free-flowing and instrumental sound, fusing Brazilian music with US pop, rock and experimental indie styles.
