The Canadian artist serves up a fine selection of disco and synth oddities at the Arbutus Records’ ten-year anniversary.
Daniel Woodhead AKA Moon King was born in Toronto, but he became closely affiliated with the flourishing electronic music and party scene in Montreal surrounding cult indie label Arbutus Records in the early 2010’s. He began frequently performing as a touring musician with Grimes, Sean Nicholas Savage and Doldrums as well as releasing records via Fucked Up’s Mike Haliechuk’s label One Big Silence and indie powerhouse Last Gang. Last year Daniel released Hamtramck ’16 via Arbutus Records, documenting a stint living in the Detroit neighborhood of the same name as well as Moon King’s shift towards disco and dance music. In this episode, Daniel Benjamin performs a special DJ set, spinning ’80s synth pop and rare grooves at the ten-year anniversary celebrating the seminal Montréal label.
