Rousing rumba, rock and Congotronics: Jupiter Bokondji shares sounds and stories transmitting the energetic vibrations of Kinshasa.

When you travel to a new destination, it’s essential to have a savvy guide, especially when you’re landing in a bustling megalopolis like Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo. Thankfully we have such an expert to bring us into the soul of the city. Celebrated music hero and political firebrand Jupiter Bokondji of Jupiter & Okwess takes us on a tour through Kinshasa to experience the diverse, ever-evolving music that fills its streets. His sonic tour is bookended with pieces from Jupiter & Okwess’ recent album, Kin Sonic, to illustrate how this turf has informed the hybrid sound, absorbing the rich history of Congolese music while blasting it into the universe and beyond. Your host Frosty opens the program with musical flashes from Sweden, Brazil, Ethiopia, Holland and other destinations.
