The Illegal Civilization founder and Mid90s producer calls in to chat North Hollywood, skate vids and his forthcoming event for RBMF LA.
At just 12 years of age, LA’s Mikey Alfred founded the streetwear and skateboard brand Illegal Civilization. Driven by Alfred’s tenacious entrepreneurial spirit and aided by clutch connections with the likes of Frank Ocean and Tyler the Creator, the brand has blossomed into a full-fledged media company. Under Illegal Civ, the young filmmaker — now 23 years old — has produced branded videos, music videos and a short film starring the late Mac Miller. He also earned co-production credits on Jonah Hill’s directorial debut, Mid90s. On February 16, Alfred and his crew will present a day-long event at the 1950s-era Pink Motel in Sun Valley as part of the Red Bull Music Festival Los Angeles, featuring Tierra Whack, Show Me the Body, Tommy Genesis and more. Today Alfred calls into the studio to walk us through his vision for this unique experience, and discuss the things that have influenced him most along his creative journey.
