The post-punk synth trio discusses the many sonic influences behind their fourth studio album, Rendered Armor.

As Ritual Howls, the trio of vocalist and guitarist Paul Bancell, keyboardist and percussionist Christopher Samuels and bassist Ben Saginaw have carved out their own sonic niche, a sound they call “death jangle.” They combine post-punk, gothic synth and industrial rock to soundtrack a wild west eternally blanketed in thick, grey mist. Creating haunting atmospheres that feel both futuristic and retro is a skill they’ve honed since their 2012 self-titled debut, and it’s ever-present on their forthcoming fourth album, Rendered Armor. Today they’ll call into the studio to talk about the elements that shaped their sound and the surrealist scenes that drive the album’s theme.
