The Factory Floor drummer on shirking away from icy textures in favor of warmer tones and poppier hooks on his solo debut.
Gabe Gurnsey is best known as the drummer and co-founder of the Factory Floor, an industrial outfit who favored deconstructing ice cold techno beats and strung out no wave electronica to create cataclysmic club hits. This past August, Gurnsey turned up the heat for his solo debut album, Physical released via Erol Alkan’s Phantasy label. Endless drones and jabbing basslines, replaced by punchy EBM, rhythmic Balearic synth and funky Chicago House. We listen back today to Gurnsey discussing the drive to move into these warmer sonic climes and whether he’ll ever move back to the shadows.
