A Conversation with Hype Williams
A conversation with the legendary ’90s hip-hop music video director about his groundbreaking work, live at Red Bull Music Festival New York.
Making his name as a music video director in the ’90s, “Hype” Williams’ flamboyant and daring style was perfectly in sync with the commercial ascendancy of hip-hop culture. His landmark visuals for Busta Rhymes, Missy Elliott, Puffy, Mase and Tupac pushed rap iconography to new levels of maximalism, while collaborations with the Notorious B.I.G., Craig Mack, Wu Tang Clan, DMX and others remain testaments to the poetry of simplicity. For this conversation, presented as part of the Red Bull Music Festival New York Director’s Series, and hosted by Jeff “Chairman” Mao, the “Basquiat of the streets” will discuss the making of selected videos.
