From EWF to Phyllis Hyman and Anita Baker: A tribute to Skip Scarborough, the most notorious songwriter you might have never heard of.
The music industry is full of well-kept secrets like Skip Scarborough. The Grammy-winning songwriter penned, produced and played on hit records for a raft of artists, including Earth, Wind and Fire, Patti LaBelle, Syreeta, Donald Byrd and the Mizell Brothers, Bill Withers, Anita Baker, Bobbi Humphrey, Phyllis Hyman, Kashif, and many others. His achingly soulful take on jazzy funk and rare groove shaped the butter-funk ’70s, the electrified and rare groove ’80s, the hip-hop ’90s and beyond. Skip came up in an age when songwriters were at the very top of their game, and to score this many hits is simply exceptional writing. While Skip wasn’t in the spotlight, you’d instantly recognize tracks such as the hugely-covered “Can’t Hide Love”, “Living Inside Your Love”, “Lovely Day”, and “Giving You The Best I Got”, among many others, and he certainly soundtracked more than his fair share of romance throughout the years. Hats off.
