From the streets of Durban to the hard drives of Europe’s dance music vanguard via WhatsApp: Vivian Host explores the sound of South Africa’s recent club craze, Gqom.
For the next month, the Vortex will be presenting four special episodes to go along with RBMA’s H∆SHTAG$ video series on internet phenomena and digital culture. This episode travels to Durban, South Africa to talk to several of the minds behind gqom, the hypnotic and tribal strain of homegrown underground house that’s driving people to lose their morality on the dancefloor (at least according to the YouTube comments). We speak to DJ Lag and Rudeboyz, who have recently released EPs on London’s forward-leaning Goon Club Allstars label, and Goon Club co-founder Moleskin drops in for a mix of his favorite gqom bangers. Plus, extra Durban fire from Babes Wodumo, Dominowe, DJ Target, Distruction Boys and Bhizer, and maybe even a bit of kwaito and sgubhu if you’re lucky.
