Roots of British Jazz
Mafalda weaves through the heady jazz atmospheres of Britain from the ’60s, featuring Tubby Hayes, Ian Carr and Stan Tracey.
Welcome to the Tropic of Love. Today we’re visiting some of the last show’s ancestors, by listening to the African- and Caribbean-influenced sounds of Joe Harriot and Amancio d’Silva, Don Rendell, Mike Westbrook, Michael Garrick, Ian Carr and Nucleus, Stan Tracey, Ambrose Campbell and Tubby Hayes, as well as recordings by British artists on labels such as ECM, Deram, Vertigo and Fontana. The next two hours will take us through music that boosted the British jazz scene from the 1960s through the ’90s.
