The self-proclaimed art kid from Baltimore unpacks his street raps and 2018 LP Swamp Boy with host Lawrence Burney.
Born and raised in West Baltimore, Jujuan Allen, AKA Butch Dawson, found his way into music through school talent shows and rap battles. While producing for MCs like Black Zheep Dz, Little Pain and Abdu Ali, he began self-releasing his own mixtapes, where he juxtaposed instrumentals (seemingly lifted from smoky jazz clubs) with street raps from his hometown. With his new album Swamp Boy, Allen (who in his spare time has modeled for Adidas, ASOS, New Balance and others) further establishes himself as a Bmore artist on the rise. Later on in the program, Okayplayer music editor Ivie E. Ani stops by to discuss a Twitter debate she sparked over the weekend about female-identifying journalists being left out of the discourse.
