Merrill sits down with self-taught arranger, producer and lyricist Jean Grae for a chat about ’90s NYC hip-hop, studio alchemy and more.

A self-proclaimed superhero (a title she has earned through years of hard work and harder raps), Jean Grae has earned acclaim as a self-taught arranger, producer and hip-hop lyricist — she rose to prominence in the hip-hop scene of late-’90s New York, and is acclaimed for her work as a talk-show host and a writer of comics, screenplays and fiction. Speaking together in Brooklyn’s Bed-Stuy neighborhood, between stops on Garbus’s tour with David Byrne, the two musician-producers nerd out about digital audio workstations, Grae’s new album with partner Quelle Chris, Everything’s Fine, and navigating the studio and the stage.
